Description
Derick Smith initially began a career in design before moving on to chemical photography which resulted in a solo exhibition in New York (2006). Later, he moved onto sculpture and painting after graduating from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (2012) and has since exhibited in national and international exhibitions. The core of his practice presents and arranges particular ‘art’ materials as a means of creating analogical models or investigations into ideas of meaning-making in contemporary global society. Although presented as paintings, much of the work is sculptural in nature and pushes boundaries between static and dynamic by exploring the edges of wet and dry materials and indeed the common associations of the materials themselves. His work is held in the Irish state art collection and private collections in France, Germany, Japan, U.S.A, the Middle East and the U.K
